CD426: Daniel Galay Klassical Klezmer. Michèle Gingras, clarinet with Ron Matson piano., MSR Classics, 2008. Much of Daniel Galay's output as a composer revolves around the life, language, and music of the Jews of Eastern Europe. Yiddish folklore and literature as well as klezmer music have formed the core of his music in recent years. Each of his books of klezmer music consists of 18 selections, and revolves around a particular theme. The titles of the pieces start with the same word in Yiddish. For his first book of original klezmer melodies the composer chose the theme of fa (for). Galay's klezmer varies from joyous to melancholy, and takes us on a journey to the world of Eastern European Jewry of a century ago. Unique to Galay's style is the setting for clarinet and piano, making performance of klezmer music accessible to the classical performer. Thus folk meets classical, and the composer encourages the performer to be creative and seek out new sounds in his playing. The clarinetist Michèle Gingras has become one of the premier performers of Galay's klezmer music. Her sensitive playing captures the nuances of the music and brings the beautiful tone of the clarinet to the fore. Sit back, and enjoy the concert! The pieces are: Far Rivke (For Rivka), Farfelekh (Farfel), Farvelkung (Fading), Far Pinyes Tekhter (For Pinye's daughters), Far Vos Raboysay? (For what, gentlemen?), Far Dvoyrele (For Deborah), Farbaysekhts (A snack), Farn Keyser (For the emperor), Farginer (The benevolent), Far Ale Mol! (Forever!), Farkatshte Arbl (Folded sleeves), Farputste Lordn (Elegant lords), Farshpetykung (Lateness), Fardreyte Mayse (A crooked story), Far Yentele (For Yentel), Far Khosn-Kale (For bride and groom), Farshtopte Kep (Closed heads), and Farn Oylem (For the audience).

CD476: Old Wine, New Bottles. Floyd Williams clarinet and bass clarinet with JANUS (piano, double bass, viola, alto saxophone and tenor voice). Move Records, 2010. This disc by Floyd Williams & JANUS illustrates the cross fertilisation of folk/popular and jazz genres that occur in classical music. The original premise was to play early music (14th - 16th centuries) on modern instruments without regard for any historian's "purist" concerns. This approach was also used for the songs of Leonard Cohen where they were arranged by the very talented Jonathan Henderson for a chamber music ensemble. This was taken further by the songs being sung in a manner closer to art song or lieder. I also thought it would be interesting to juxtapose the Cohen songs with earlier songs by Machaut and Josquin in order to emphasise what they have in common as regards the concerns expressed in the texts (the pain of love, jealousy, and betrayal). Morton Gould Benny's Gig for Clarinet and Double Bass; Guillaume de Machaut Phyton le Mervilleus Serpent; Leonard Cohen Famous Blue Raincoat and Hallelujah; Josquin Des Prez Mille Regretz; Wm. Thomas McKinley Blue Jeans (an assortment of blues and "things"); Elway Bevin Browning; Christopher Tye Sit Fast; Maschwitz, Sherwin and Strachey A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square; Khai-Wei Choong Logic in Transit; and Gustavo Beytelmann 8 Airs autour du Tango (Nos. 4, 6, and 8).
