Quartett for clarinet, violin, violoncello and piano had its first
performancein New York City in 1939 with Victor Polatschek as
clarinetist. It is in three long movements: Mässig bewegt, Sehr
langsam, and Mässig bewegt. The second movement has intricate
rhythms while the third movement is extended, with several sections and
tempo changes. The instrumental parts are musically demanding, and the
piano part is especially difficult. |

Motives derived from the quartal and quintal structures provide most of
the melodic material. While not technically difficult at the mm=54
tempo, the parts move independently in most of this piece. Early

commissioned and written for The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln
Center and its Artistic Director, David Shifrin. The materials of this
work are drawn from fragments of folk tunes the composer heard while
living in the northwest part of China. Unlike most Chinese folk music
this music has a seven-note scale similar to the mixolydian mode. In
four movements: I. Andante, II. Prestissimo, and III. Largo. Both
B-flat and A clarinets are needed. This is a professional level work
with a duration about 17 minutes.

composer Bright Sheng (1955-) who lived near the Tibetan border during

composer wrote "the work is anchored on the last movement, the longest
of the three. The first two movements are reminiscent, as if one is
hearing songs from a distant memory, and the music becomes real in the
