Notturno aus "Abendunterhaltungen" for
Flute (Violin) or Clarinet and Guitar
by Anton Diabelli. Philomele Editions (PE 2007), SS. Anton Diabelli
(1781-1858) was an Austrian music publisher, editor and composer. The
six pieces that make up this edition were originally published
(1818/19) in two
volumes that included works of other composers. The clarinet parts were
originally for an obsolete type of recorder known as a csakan which was
usually in the key of A. The six pieces are 1. Andante con moto, 2.
Menuetto (Moderato assia e cantabile), 3. Marcia (Allegro), 4. Original
Thema und Variationen (Andante grazioso), 5. Polonaise, and 6. Marcia
(Allegro). Several of these pieces should be playable by better high
school wind players while the rest are more difficult. Includes parts
for flute (violin), clarinet, guitar, and a score. While the music
calls for an A clarinet, a capo can be used on the guitar to raise the
pitch so a B-flat clarinet can be used. |

Jeanne-Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was a French composer (she studied

four movements: Andante/Allegro moderato, Adagio, Minuetto (Allegro),
and Finale (Allegro). This trio has been reported to contain both
Romantic and Classical influences. The piano part appears to be the
most difficult of the parts. I believe a college level trio (with a
good pianist) could probably put this together fairly quickly. |

C1262:
Sonate No. 1 in D minor for
clarinet and guitar by Ferdinand Rebay. Philomele Editions, SS.
Ferdinand Rebay (1880-1953) was an Austrian composer. He wrote 600
pieces for guitar apparently inspired by his niece Gertha
Hammerschmied. This large scale, three movement sonata is written, as
usually for Rebay, in a concertant style giving the guitar part full
participation in the melodic action. The beautiful opening Allegro
molto moderato is a sonata movement constructed on two themes strongly
reminiscent of Brahms late clarinet works. The slow central movement
brings a set of variations and the finale is a rhythmically marked
Tanz-Rondo in the way of some central European folkloric dance.
