ABRSM Music Medals. This
is a series of five books from the Associated Board of the Royal
Schools of Music featuring carefully graded duets, trios and quartets
for beginning and intermediate clarinetists. While they were developed
as part of the ABRSM Music Medals program, they can be used in any
setting where interesting and pedagogically sound ensemble pieces are
needed. Each book contains pieces which have parts from other levels
above and/or below the current one. They feature pieces (original and
an occasional arrangement) by composer such as Paul Harvey, James Rae,
Paul Harris, and many more. C319: Copper Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 16 pages. This beginner level book has 7 duets, 5 trios, and 4 quartets. All in the lower register. C320: Bronze Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 16 pages. The next beginner level book has 6 duets, 5 trios, and 4 quartets. Faster and more eight notes than the previous book, but still in the lower register. C321: Silver Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 24 pages. This middle book in the series is still at a beginner level with all parts that are "silver" or below in the lower register. Dotted eighth-sixteenth rhythms are frequently used in these pieces. It has 6 duets, 4 trios, and 4 quartets. C322: Gold Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 24 pages. The upper register finally makes its appearance in this book. This is at an intermediate level with many pieces that are significantly more complex than the previous volume. The quartets in particular may be useful for middle school and even beginning high school quartets. There are 6 duets, 4 trios, and 4 quartets. C323: Platinum Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 36 pages. The final book in the series is similar to the previous book at a slightly more difficult level and the same comments apply. There are 6 duets, 4 trios, and 5 quartets. |

C672: Trio Op 23 for
clarinet, cello and piano
by
Adolphe Blanc. Rosewood, 1999. With alternate parts for violin in place
of clarinet and bass clarinet,
basset horn
or viola in place of cello.
Adolphe Blanc (1828-1885) was a French composer who was an especially
prolific composer of chamber music. It is in three movements: I.
Allegro ma non troppo, II. Scherzo (Vivace), and III.
Andante/Moderato. In the bass clarinet version, there are a very
few notes that fall in the extended range but this shouldn't be a
problem with a low E-flat instrument. The basset horn part,
however, will be a real test of extended range skills. |

Concert Duet for Clarinet and Bass Clarinet
by
Jerry L. Bowder. Manduca Music, 1996, SS. One extended movement of what
looks like a fun piece. A low C bass clarinet is called for, but there
aren't many notes in the extended range. Separate parts in score format
with the other part in small print. Probably early college, but might
be attempted by a high school duo with an outstanding bass clarinetist. (Except other items with free shipping.) |

by
Elliott Carter. Hendon Music/Boosey & Hawkes, 2001. Printed in

clarinetists Ayako [Oshima] and Charles Neidich, whose performances
were so outstanding that I chose to write this piece in the fall of
2001 for them. I asked Ayako to suggest a title and she explained it:
'a very special poetic word originally used by the ancient Chinese
poet, Bai Juyi, and adopted by old Japanese authors, meaning two birds
flying together with the connotation of eternal love.'" An advanced

C752: Puppets for Two
B-flat Clarinets by Clare Grundman. Boosey & Hawkes, 1969, 3
pages (includes two parts in score format). We're fond of Grundman's
work and we thought this intermediate level work for two equal
clarinets would be a good addition to our stock. Marked Allegro
moderato leggiero, it alternates between crisp choppy sections
(we can imagine those puppets bouncing on their strings) and legato
interludes. (Except other items with free shipping.) |

C395: Serenade Op. 131 for 2 B-flat Clarinets by Michael Kibbe. Woodwindiana, 1999, SS, 21 pages (score format). Kibbe (b. 1945) composed this piece for Howard Klug. The seven brief movements are drawn from traditional forms from many cultures. They are: Prelude, March, Blues, Tango, Tarantella, Elegy, and Hora. The composer's intention was to provide a piece that was both fun to play and would make an immediate connection with the audience. | |

C741: Twelve
Kegelduette KV 487/496a for 2 Basset
Horns or 2 Natural Horns
by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart edited by Thomas Grass and Dietrich Demus
and with
dynamics and ornamentation by Wolfgang Meyer. Wintergarten
Publications, 2006, SB, 31 pages. These duets (three of which have
survived in autograph) were written when Mozart was very young
(1767/68) and are his first works for basset horn. However, there are
very few notes in the extended range and they can be played with few
problems on clarinet or bass clarinet. Each duet is printed twice, once
as published in 1802/03 and a second time with dynamics and
ornamentation suggested by Wolfgang Meyer. All are in score format. |
