C668x: Hiyoku for two
clarinets
by
Elliott Carter. Hendon Music/Boosey & Hawkes, 2001. Printed in
score format on four somewhat oversized pages. The composer wrote, "Hiyoku
was written for the
clarinetists Ayako [Oshima] and Charles Neidich, whose performances
were so outstanding that I chose to write this piece in the fall of
2001 for them. I asked Ayako to suggest a title and she explained it:
'a very special poetic word originally used by the ancient Chinese
poet, Bai Juyi, and adopted by old Japanese authors, meaning two birds
flying together with the connotation of eternal love.'" An advanced
work.

music is larger than the typical piece and it was packed in the

C1153x: Prelude, Blues and Finale for Two
Clarinets
in A (or Clarinet in A and Viola) and Piano
by Elie Siegmeister. Carl Fischer, SS. Elie Siegmeister (1909-1991) was
an American composer, educator and author. This is a challenging and
exciting piece that was composed for Stanley and Naomi Drucker and
Blanche Abram and premiered by them in 1984. This edition was copied
from a manuscript which appears to have had a number of corrections
(cut and paste) especially in the first few pages. It is supplied with
a piano score, and a part with the first and second clarinet part and
another with the first clarinet and viola part, so when played by two
clarinetists they each have their own part. Duration about 16
minutes. An expensive print on demand piece ($95.25). This copy was ordered for a library in Australia but has an indentation about two inches long at the top center that goes all the way through. Still completely useable and offered at a substantial discount. |
